Now that you have made the most important decision of your life, it’s important to acknowledge that some things must change! 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” Change is necessary if you want to keep your life on track with Christ. In fact, if you were honest with yourself, you would probably say that you wanted to make these changes all along, but were unable to do so without God’s help.
Let us share some important next steps as you embrace this exciting new life!
Join a Church
Every Christian needs to join a good bible teaching church. There you will receive nurturing and guidance, and learn practical ways to develop your relationship with God on a daily basis. If you are in the Washington, DC Metropolitan area, and would like to join the Harvest family, click here. We would love for you to become a part of our family!
Acts 2:38 says, “…Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.”
Now that you are a Christian, it is so important to be baptized, just as Christ Himself was baptized (Matthew 3:16). Baptism is an outward expression of the inward change you experienced when you accepted Christ. It’s also symbolic – when you go down in the water, it symbolizes the death and burial of the old you (like Christ died and was buried), and when you come up from the water, it symbolizes your resurrection into new life (like Christ was resurrected).
It’s also a matter of simple obedience. The Word of God tells us to “repent, and be baptized…”, so that’s what we should do! If you haven’t been baptized yet, stop by Guest and Membership Services in the foyer to pick up a Baptism packet.
“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” John 14:26
The Holy Spirit is a very important part of every believer’s life. When we repent and accept Christ as Savior, the Holy Spirit begins to dwell within us. The Word of God shows us that the Holy Ghost will teach us all things. He is the One who empowers us to understand God’s Word, to work in ministry, to love our enemies, to have the courage to witness to others about God! God calls the Holy Spirit a Comforter – He is with us at all times. When we get into a situation where we have to make a choice, He will “bring all things to your remembrance” (John 14:26) – He will remind you of the teaching that you’ve heard, the Word that you’ve read, and He won’t force you to make the right choice of what to do, but He will give you all the information you need to make the right choice.
Ephesians 5 teaches us to “…be filled with the Spirit…” Being filled with the Holy Spirit is the next level of connection with God that every believer should desire.
How To Be Filled With the Holy Spirit
You must be saved (have accepted Christ in your life).
You have to want God to fill you with Himself. This means that you want God to totally have His way in your life. Your thinking, your desires, your actions will all be controlled by the Holy Spirit!
You must confess to God any known sin and ask God to forgive you for your sins.
Now, all you have to do is ask! We receive the Holy Spirit by faith, so when you ask God to fill you, consider it done!
Surround yourself with other believers and friends that will encourage you on this new journey of faith. They should be an asset to your life and not a liability.
Get involved in ministry. God has gifted you with many talents and abilities for use in His Kingdom. If you sing, join the choir – have a winning smile, join the Greeters Ministry. Choose at least one ministry to serve on. We will appreciate you helping the ministry, and Jesus will too!
Now that you’ve been changed, share your testimony about your new life in Christ with others. God saved you so that you can be a witness for Him. Invite someone to Harvest. Tell them how God set you free.
Make today a day of new beginnings in your life, and don’t look back! Take confidence in knowing that God has forgiven you, forgotten your past mistakes and has granted you full access to His everlasting love and abundant life. Now isn’t that great news?
